Chatterbox
2016
CICA Gallery (Czong Institute of Contemporary Art)
Gimpos Son, South Korea
March - May 2016
Worn as a prosthetic device, the artist 3D printed her entire mouth, carving out a petite hole in each individual tooth. Along with her digitally fabricated mouth, she produced a series of 6 petite sterling silver charms including: a frying pan, colander, fork, knife, spoon, and spatula.
Throughout her performance, which lasts for 10 minutes, the artist attempts to assemble and disassemble her mouth, threading each utinsel in an individual tooth, while humming Leslie Gore’s 1962 hit “You Don’t Own Me.” The result is chilling and directly challenges a historically feminist relationship with oral hygiene, oral contraceptives, and a physical opening used as a mode of communication, pleasure, and activism.
