WHAT IS NATIVE STRATEGIES (NS)?
Co-directed by artists Brian Getnick and Tanya Rubbak, Native Strategies (NS) is a network of performance makers, producers and critical thinkers who seek to invigorate and make globally visible Los Angeles’s performance art community. We are engaged in a 6 year study (2011 – 2017) of LA performance modalities through the creation of 10 differently themed performance series and 10 uniquely designed journals, resulting in a book. Our writers and visual artists seek to distill what ideas are urgent to the participating artists and to experiment with how the production of a document is in itself a performance. In response to concerns raised by our community, Native Strategies will change it's name in Fall 2016.

How did the apex of the AIDS crisis in Los Angeles shape the history and ontology of performance art? OnJune 5th, 18th, 19th and 26th, Native Strategies will facilitate public dialogues between artists, writers, activists, and scholars to reflect on the impact of AIDS on their individual practices and their and sense of belonging or division from a particular LGBTQ lineage and community. Our free public program, hosted at the ACE hotel downtown, will be a series of conversations, performances and presentations between critical thinkers whose perspectives and work will shape the forthcoming issue, LGBTQP(erformace) designed by Native Strategies co-director Tanya Rubbak. This series is curated by Brian Getnick and Marc Streit with support from Ruben Esparza, Mark Cramer, Mary Ellyn Johnson and swissnex San Francisco.
