Spur Performance 1

This performance is part of the GREENER PASTURES series.

SPUR PIECE 1 (2016) explores social conditioning and animal empathy as a performative act. Using nonverbal communication while standing on the threshold of a horses’ barn yard stall at a family ranch, the artist tames her body to juxtapose dominance and surrender.

Initially inspired by the cowboy phrase, “Don’t sit on your own spurs,” for a total of 15 minutes, she kicks her bare behind repeatedly wearing only a pair of handcrafted aluminum spurs tied to her feet.

This work is installed as a looping video performance along with the original spurs that were worn, glass replicas of the spurs, and a collection of 6 digital images that document the changing bruises on the artist body following the performance.
